On the other hand, for every $100 spent at national chains, only $13 of economic impact was felt in local economies. A similar study was done right here in Maine in 2003 in the Mid Coast Region. The economic impact of consumer spending at eight local businesses was contrasted with the impact generated by spending at eight national chain stores. The results showed that 44.6% of the dollars stayed in the surrounding Maine counties, while an additional 8.7% was spent state wide. Only 14.1% of the money spent at the chain stores stayed in Maine. 

National studies have also shown that just as little as a 10% increase in local spending spurs job creation. A Portland study in 2006 found that a 10% increase in local spending would result in an increase in $50 million in revenue in Greater Portland and 600 additional jobs. Local businesses proportionally tend to employ more local labor and buy more local goods than national competitors. Local businesses are located right here in our state, don’t operate from remote headquarters, and contribute more to local charities at a rate of 4 to 1. Local businesses contribute more to state and local taxes.
